Joe Curren was born in Santa Barbara, California. At eighteen he began a career as a professional surfer; brought up in a family with a legendary big wave pioneer and surfboard shaper as a father and a 3x world champion as an older brother it was inevitable the sport would play a big role in his life.

For his part, Joe spent his younger years earning a reputation of his own as a world class surfer and far-flung traveler. It was these combined pursuits that spawned a pursuit of photography.

Since picking up a camera, Joe's travels have taken him to over forty countries on six continents. Recent highlights include visits to Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Greece, Iceland and Sao Tome in West Africa.

Joe has been featured in the films Good Times (1996), The Fifth Symphony Document (2001), Glass Love (2004), Thread (2007) and One California Day (2007).

His photography clients include Patagonia, Simple Shoes, Channel Islands Surfboards and The Surfer's Journal. His work has also been exhibited in at the 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco, The Orange County Museum of Art, The Milk Gallery in Soho, NY and The Claska Gallery in Tokyo, Japan.
