David Pu'u

Santa Barbara, California

David Pu'u was raised in Santa Barbara, California. A former elite athlete in multiple sports and corporate CEO, he terminated a twenty year career in the Surf Industry to pursue Photography and Cinematography in 1996.

In the period of time since then, David has established himself as a leading editorial photographer, with work regularly appearing in publications worldwide. Approximately forty editorial publications, located in Europe, Japan, Australia and the U.S., regularly use his work. Publications range from magazines like Surfer (Senior Photographer) and Surfers Journal, to mainstream concerns such as Sports Illustrated, National Geographic, NY Post, London Daily Mirror, SZ.De, Playboy, Time and many others. He also acquired the 2003 Canon Image of the Year award.

Concentrating initially on water photography and ocean related subjects, where he is currently recognized as being one of the leading image producers in the world, David quickly broadened his subject range by doing limited entertainment industry projects, where he worked doing production stills, celebrity portraiture, and miscellaneous art department work. His work appears as on screen art in a variety of motion pictures.

He is well versed in all phases of photography and lighting, and has competently produced an array of magazine covers, spreads and features, shooting from the water, jet skis, helicopters, airplanes, and moving vehicles, preferring a moving set to more staid studio work.

David also works as a commercial shooter with clients running the gamut from surf and apparel industry concerns, to various corporate clients. Commercially trained in digital formats, he also is able to produce work on demand in viable digital file form with his in house, digital system. Images are delivered via CD-R and/or DVD-R.

His work has won several prestigious art shows, and has been selected to hang and screen in museum venues, such as the Texas Institute of Art, and the American History Museum in NY, and Museum Nacional in Brazil.

In 2000, David began shooting high speed motion picture action sports pieces in both 16mm and 35mm formats. David produces specialty water camera footage, which is commercially marketed through over thirty agencies worldwide. His footage appears regularly in feature films, various television projects, and commercials.

David is represented internationally by Corbis Media. His analog library boasts an image file of close to 60,000 images, with many subjects available in digital commercial file format. Retail print sales are available direct through: Wetsand.com, and hookupu-surfart.com
