Aloha and welcome to one of Hawaii’s most unique artists. The 2011 Triple Crown of Surfing artist, Troy Carney has developed a unique technique that involves the building of a multi-dimensional painting. Troy uses Japanese knives to cut Cotton Bristol into layers that are later gilded with Genuine Gold, painted with pigment-rich oil and acrylic paints, and individually placed between multiple layers of art resin. This technique gives the art more depth with drop shadows and reflective golden highlights. Born in New Zealand, Troy was inspired at an early age by an exotic life of travel. His mother is a fine artist and his stepfather, a professional surfer and surfboard shaper. Troy’s romantically realistic style features exotic elements and sacred symbology that have been inspired by his travels and by the beauty and artistry of the diverse cultures of Bali and Indonesia, Asia, and Polynesia. In 1979, his family fell in love with Kauai, Hawai, where Troy attended high school. The Maori and Polynesian cultures ignited Troy’s creativity and have motivated his work ever since.
