Surf Art, a 50th Anniversary Celebration

San Clemente CA-- From depictions of California’s 50s surf scene Surf Art has expanded in style, technique, and application to become one of the dominant genres in America today. Its themes are expressed in works of fine art, illustrations for every medium, décor, fashion, advertising, and architecture.

Surf Art's reflection of, and impact on, values and cultures around the world will be discussed by a panel of some of its best known practitioners today: Wolfgang Bloch, Alex Weinstein, Kevin Ancell, Kevin Short, and Phil Roberts. Joining them on the panel will be Laguna Art Museum Directory, Bolton Colburn, Surfer's Journal Art Editor, Scott Hulet, and Publisher, Steve Pezman.

A noted fine artist today, Wolfgang Bloch worked in illustration and art direction for Billabong, Quiksilver, and other major brands in and out of the surf industry.

Kevin Ancell grew up in Santa Monica's hard-edged surf/skate scene of the 60s. Known for irreverent social sculpture and paintings, as well as abalone encrusted surfboards of incredible beauty, he works from his studio in San Francisco today.

Alex Weinstein's work evokes the primal connection between surfer and water and the element’s ability to conjure emotion. He works his magic in large format paintings and sculpture.

In his 25 year career, Kevin Short has focused his plein air skills on landscapes from the desert to the sea, and continues to include surf and beach culture in his work. His Trestles book adorns surfer's coffee tables around the world.

The Book of Waves established Phil Roberts as more than a highly skilled illustrator, but an artist with reverence for both the science and power of the ocean. His work embraces both commercial and fine art realms.

Discussing the people, art, and waves that have influenced and inspired them, the artists will share some of the techniques that make their work unique. Showing opens at 6:30PM, Friday, June 05; symposium begins at 7:15. Hors d’oeuvres and no-host bar available; advance tickets, $30. Proceeds will benefit the non-profit Surfing Heritage Foundation, 949 388 0313, online at surfingheritage.org

Plein Air and the Natural World of Surfing

San Clemente CA-- While associated most often with landscape, the blue-green Pacific is a time tested subject for California’s plein air artists, whose tradition is intertwined with the history of Laguna Beach and the coastlines of California.

Working with oil on canvas Kevin Short is among the finest interpreters of contemporary beachscapes. Based in Orange County, Kevin’s surf art shows a special affinity for the Trestles experience, as revealed in the works currently on display at the Surfing Heritage Foundation through June 05.

A Surfer's Insight into the World of Water

San Clemente CA-- En route to Southern California, Alex Weinstein graduated in Fine Art from Brown University in Rhode Island, then opened a gallery in Pont Aven, the home of Paul Gauguin, 5 miles from the Brittany coastline in France. And like Gauguin, Weinstein explores each subject in depth, wringing nuance from every detail.

His subject is the ocean, and because he surfs, surfers may be his most appreciative audience. With a reverence for surface, he explores the way light plays upon the border between the worlds of water and air, and his work evokes the ocean's mass and brooding power. Six examples of Weinstein’s art will be part of a month long show beginning June 5 at the Surfing Heritage Foundation, San Clemente.

A Wave Beckons

San Clemente, CA-- It is the wave in your dreams, that distant perfect right-- or left-- whose power you hear a world away.

Wolfgang Bloch was born a world away from L.A., in Ecuador, and learned to surf as a kid off beaches west of Guayaquil. With the ocean as his muse he immigrated to Florida, then on to Pasadena where he graduated from the rigorous Art Center, College of Design.

Despite a successful design career with firms like Quiksilver and Billabong, it is that powerful perfect wave that brings Bloch satisfaction in fine art today. His work, at once both abstract and immediately real, draw the viewer in with the subtle colors of nature. His paintings, on a mix of both canvas and found objects, will be on display for a month beginning June 05.

Roots of Surf Art

San Clemente CA-- Folks who associate Surf Art with magazine illustrations, cartoons, and Tshirt designs will find confirmation in the work of Rick Rietveld. His shirt designs for Maui and Sons were iconic, his surf competition posters, fantasy prints, and illustrations have graced walls from dorm rooms to board rooms.

But far beyond the work of a journeyman artist, Rietveld's paintings explore romance, sensuality and the rugged outdoors in themes ranging from rodeo to dragons.

Surf Art Symposium Wrap Up

Postby cotw on Tue Jun 23, 2009 8:17 pm

SHF's first Annual Surf Art Symposium was an evening of lively discussion and some breath-taking displays, with the work being available for purchase. The display will remain on exhibit through mid-July, and includes a collection of 8 surfboards representing the collaborative efforts of photographer Brown Cannon, shaper Nick Palandrani, and the wood craftmanship of Bruce Gordon.

This exhibit truly captures the fullness of spirit and expression that is the genre of surf art today. As surf artist Ron Croci says, regardless of style, technique or application all "have the effect of creating in the viewer, a sense of happiness". This is an exhibit you do not want to miss, hopefully you will leave feeling inspired.
