Biography
Lucia Griggi has an enviable life. Dividing her time between her homes in both Cornwall, UK and Venice, Italy, Lucia travels the world most of the year capturing the nature and lifestyle of surfing in some of the most extreme conditions and idyllic locations photographing both in and out of the water.
Lucia is one of a small handful of women in the world to have broken through the male dominated ranks of surf photographers and she is the only female photographer in the UK whose work regularly appears in the top surf magazines as well as the fashion press.
Still in her 20's, Lucia has an Exhibition touring in Europe named 'Surf Life'. As well as the photographs on display, the exhibition also features Lucia's images laminated onto her surfboards, furniture, such as coffee tables, and even deckchairs. Lucia also runs series of workshops aimed specifically at women interested in careers in photography.
"As well as a great photographer, she’s a fantastic role model for women, breaking through in not just one, but two male dominated industries – surfing and photography."
- Geoff Swallow, foundation of surf art culture UK
Lucia's work frequently appears internationally in magazines such as Carve, Surfgirl, Wavelength, Hebe, Maxim, Cooler magazine, and her advertising industry clients include RipCurl, Roxy, Headworx, Sri Lankan Airlines, Calvin Klein, Rimmel and Davidoff to name but a few.
A regular on the surf circuit for the last seven years, she admits that, "surfing has inspired me to photograph. I love the people and the ocean." Lucia brings these two aspects together in series of photographs which capture different facets of the surfing lifestyle alongside her love of portraiture.
"It takes a courageous person to make it in the world of surfing photography and Lucia’s done just that. Learning her craft along the way, she was thrown into taking and printing photos for newspapers, magazines, websites and promotions companies, from six in the morning to 12 at night, then writing press releases for local and national press and magazines."
- Jonathan Morris, BBC News
As well as exotic, Bounty-ad perfect locations like the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii and the Maldives, Lucia features less obvious surf locations like Alaska. However, her studies of idyllic surf spots also show the harsher social realities of destinations such as Morocco.
A regular official snapper on the WCT, WQS and UK Pro Surf Tours, she has photographed surfers at the O’Neill Highland Open in Thurso, Ripcurl Pro Santander World Tour event in Spain, and the Sri Lankan Airline Pro in the Maldives, as well as, Pipemasters, Hawaii.
"I forget that I am working because this is what I want to do," she said. "The first day I picked up my camera was the last day of work."
Lucia quickly progressed through the ranks and is now a full-time freelance photographer, working around the world for magazines, national press and advertising companies.
"I do lots of commercial shoots, but this is where my heart lies on the beach and in the water," she said. |
