Protesting through humour – A talk by Surfers Against Sewage

Check out this talk by Andy Cummins; the Campaign Officer of environmental UK charity Surfers Against Sewage titled: "Protesting through humour" — as part of the Do Lectures annual talks by inspirational individuals, sharing what they do, what they’ve learned doing it, and through their experiences recommend things you should do to make a difference, or enrich your life.

Do Lectures introducing the talk: Andy talks through the evolution of SAS. From a group of surfers from St Agnes in Cornwall wanting to end raw sewage going out into the sea to "some of the Government’s most sophisticated environmental critics" (BBS News and Current Affairs) and "Britain’s coolest environmental pressure group" (The Independent). He talks through some of their most successful campaigns and shows us how humour and entertainment can engage an audience and bring about change.

Andy Cummins, SAS Campaigns Officer

Andy started surfing way back in 1992 in the North East. Back then surfing in the North Sea was similar to surfing in an open sewer. This served as great inspiration and drive to bring about change, but at 15 he never thought he could be an active part of that movement, so the most he did was join Surfers Against Sewage (SAS). Since then, travelling, experience and education has helped open his eyes to the scale of abuse our oceans and seas suffer at our hands. He has been a full-time SAS campaigner since 2003, working on over 50 campaigns.
