The artist and Brazilian designer Tom Veiga, 29, is the creator of the Waves Series illustrations. The bold yet simplistic cubist illustrations are inspired by the shapes, sensations and feelings that waves, sun and surfing evoke.

"God was very inspired when he created and designed the sea waves, everything is perfect. Each wave has a shape, color, temperature, speed and feature that is unique, and it inspired me to reflect the beauty of the sea and the waves through design." says Tom Veiga.

His work is characterized by many colors, moving in a few strokes, he always tries to explore each wave in details and to reflect the wave with a design vision. Tom also uses his art as a form of environment awareness. He is a member of Save The Waves, a foundation that aims to preserve the oceans and beaches, of the Ocean Artists Society and of Surfrider Foundation.

"This was the heaviest day anyone had ever surfed or photographed," recalls Bielmann. Fletcher’s incredible ride and Bielmann’s photo are nominated for the Monster Tube Award in the 2012 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards.

"We had the most fearless boat driver in Tahiti and that’s the reason I got the shot," says Bielmann. The other boats in the area were already at the top of the wave looking down or on the other side of the wave, but Bielmann’s boat remained. "Nathan caught this wave and was below sea level from my angle. Then we watched him ride the biggest tube ever ridden, all the way through, before finally being taken over by the wave," an amazed Bielmann recalls.

Unusually large swells often create unusual situations. "The waves were so big this day, they were rushing up the shore and slamming into people’s homes, dragging all kinds of things back into the ocean. At one point, I saw a refrigerator floating through the lineup. When I got home, we realized it was our fridge that I had photographed," says Bielmann.

After the wave closed, I looked at my viewfinder and saw this shot, but it’s hard to tell if things are sharp on the water," Bielmann recalls.

When I finally saw the photo, I knew it was the best shot I had ever taken in my life.

Making of One Winter Story (Shooting at Maverick’s)…

About the film

One Winter Story is an unprecedented glimpse into the male-dominated world of big-wave surfing from an unusual and seldom seen perspective – a woman’s. This hour-long film explores the nature of fear and faith through the experience big-wave surf pioneer, Sarah Gerhardt. "One Winter Story" is a personal documentary that follows Sarah as she surfs Maverick’s, a monstrous wave that breaks in the freezing, shark-infested waters off Half Moon Bay in Northern California.

Sarah’s journey to Maverick’s was anything but easy. Surfing became her escape from the hardships of home and faith became the guiding force in her life. Sarah is a genuine big-wave pioneer, the first woman to surf what is one of the largest waves in the world. In the years she has been surfing the wave, Sarah has discovered that although she has many limitations, Maverick’s allows her to live as though she doesn’t have any, bringing her peace as she finds her place in the lineup, and in the world. Also featured in the film are big wave surfers Mike Gerhardt, Ken Bradshaw, and Jenny Useldinger.
